USDA Circular Plan of Ranch

This farm diagram was published in a 60-page booklet, USDA Departmental Bulletin No. 1151, “Silver-Fox Farming” (June 20, 1923), written by Frank Getz Ashbrook. Ashbrook was head of the U.S. Fur Animal Experiment Station, which was founded 1916 in Keeseville NY, moved to Saratoga Springs NY in 1923. The move and the publication of this bulletin seem to coincide with Ashbrook taking over from Dr. Carl R. Hanson, the previous head of the Experiment Station.

In other materials, the U.S. Silver Fox Farms says the “scientific” idea for a circular, panopticon farm design came from Hanson, Ashbrook, and Dr. J.A. Allen of the Fox Research Station on Prince Edward Island (along with a Canadian “Dr. Church”).
